Types of Diets
Vegan (Con'td)
This not a diet for children, unless parents keep a careful watch
over the selection of the right foods. With this diet it is very
difficult to obtain the balance of nutrients required for growth.
The vegan is often lower in weight, even underweight and normally
has a low cholesterol level. Many of the health benefits of the
lacto-ovo vegetarian diet are even more pronounced in this diet.
Most notably there is a much lower incidence of colon, breast,
uterus and prostate cancers.
Potential nutrient deficiencies are a concern. Vitamin B12 is
the main one. It is suggested that vegans take on a good supplement
program. Like with all diets if health is faltering or sickness
is reoccurring, one should take a look at the diet and reassess
their options.
Fad Diets
One important tip is to avoid fad diets. These are diets that
make huge claims of large amounts of weight loss in a short period
of time. They are normally very unbalanced.
Some clues of a fad diet are
- Asking you to eat only one type of food in large amounts.
Normally it is an unusual food.
- The promise of permanent, rapid weight loss
- No talk of increased physical activity
- Talk of calories not counting
- Suggestion that pounds will come off as you sleep.
Don't be tempted by these fad diets, as they are more harmful
to you than helpful. These diets are ineffective and can lead
to high cholesterol, high blood pressure, and side effects like
gas and bloating
