Diets have been a way of life throughout time. People through the ages are constantly trying to find a quick way to lose weight fast. One of the most popular diets of the 21th century is the Atkins protein diet named after its founder Dr Robert C Atkins. It is classified as the amazing no hunger weight loss plan that helped millions lose weight and keep it off. The purpose of the diet is to consume high amounts of protein while limiting the consumption of carbohydrates.

Many health organizations and doctors have frowned upon the Atkins diet. The Atkins diet triggers short-term weight loss through ketosis. Ketosis occurs when the body is scientifically lacking carbohydrates. The body turns to other sources stored from protein and fat in the body. This is where weight loss occurs. However, there are many problems with the protein diet.

  • high in cholesterol and fat
  • low in fruits and vegetables
  • Ketosis is the body's emergency response; inducing ketosis can lead to muscle breakdown, nausea, dehydration, headaches, light-headedness, irritability, bad breath and kidney problems.
  • in pregnancy, Ketosis may cause fetal abnormality or death
  • decreased endurance
  • increased risk of hypoglycemia
  • increased risk of certain cancers

Increasing evidence shows that the Atkins diet is not the way to lose weight and stay healthy. A balanced diet including both protein and carbohydrates is the only way to successfully lose weight and maintain health levels.
